Summary

Using Adobe After Effects as our primary tool, each week we’ll explore various methods for imagining and designing animated prototypes of both screen-based interactions (apps, websites & touch interfaces) and physical media (Installation, products, devices).

Students will design and create a convincing motion prototype of an interactive interface / product / installation.

Course Description

Have you ever noticed how your iPhones icons are shaking from fear before you decide to delete one of them?  Or that you phone nods it’s head to convey that you’ve just entered the wrong password?

Motion design has become an incredibly important component in user experience design. Animation often provides cues, guides the eye, and softens the hard edges of digital interactions. Animation can communicate in a nonverbal way. It creates emotions and personality to your interactions that your users can relate to.

Following Disney’s 12 Principles of Animation, motion has the power of adding surprise and delight to functional interactions. Google’s new “Material Design” language sets the ground for defining how to use motion as part of the design process.

This course is focused on learning advanced animation principles and techniques, to further add character, expression, and emotion to digital and tangible interfaces.

Grades

Grades will be determined according to the following breakdown:

  • Weekly Assignments 20%
  • Mid-Term Project 25%
  • Participation and Attendance 25%
  • Final Project 30%
Attendance

Attendance is mandatory. Please email me if you are going to miss a class. Showing up late for class or missing more than one class will affect your grade.

Assignment:

Over the course of 7 weeks, students will conceptualize, design and animate one project.

Your final assignment would be a 1-2 minutes video/animation that would convey an interaction in motion.

Fake it till you make it:

What kind of interaction would you design if there where no constrains to limit your imagination?

Think of a project that you’ve always wanted to make but couldn’t due to:

Budget/technical skills/lack of equipment or lack of space.

After Effects is your secret tool for prototyping and designing in motion without all of those limitations.
